The house Petro was staying in currently had been vacated by the residents four days earlier. The reason for their departure might have been that their house had been broken into too many times. Or perhaps the tires on their vehicle had been slashed again. He didn’t know, nor did he care. Their house was damn nice and the beds were comfortable. He’d move to a new house once a better one came available.

Each of his foremen had done the same with other houses. They were all enjoying the comforts of someone else’s years of labor as the residents of the town of Boutir slowly evacuated when their misery went too far beyond the threshold of what they could endure.

In fact, all of his men were eagerly anticipating moving into one of the nicer neighborhoods once their criminal efforts paid off.

Everything was going great. The excavation was now ahead of schedule. The mining equipment was only about two hundred feet from the efiasia deposit. He calculated that it would take one, maybe two more nights of digging before the deposit was reached. Then they’d have to shift to more delicate mining operations. Right now, it was just the brute method of digging into the ground and removing as much dirt as possible.

He was busy patting himself on the back, proud of himself for avoiding the pitfalls of his predecessors, when the front door opened and three of his goons walked in.

“What the hell are you doing back so early?” he snapped. It wasn’t even midnight. Prime time to work their magic on the various neighborhoods.

“Something is going on, boss,” the first guy announced.

“Something?” Petro prompted, irritation deepening his scowl. “What ‘something’ is going on that would stop guys like you?”

They all chuckled at the implied compliment as they each draped themselves over the cream colored sofa that had been left behind by the owners. The sofa had previously been a pristine piece of furniture, obviously used only for special occasions. After tonight, it would no longer be as clean. The men Petro had hired were excellent at harassing neighborhoods. But they weren’t as vigilant with their personal hygiene. Petro wasn’t even sure how the denim on one man’s body hadn’t deteriorated due to a lack of washing. It was probably only held together by the dirt and grime buried in between the fibers.

“There are military vehicles at every road heading in and out of town.”

Petro’s gut tightened and he sat up a bit in the chair. “What the hell are you talking about?” he demanded, then pushed away from the dining room table he’d been using as a desk, rushing over to the window in the front, he peered out through the curtains. Sure enough, there were armed military-type men and women standing at the corner to this street and the next block over. In fact, two of the guards that were standing at the corner were saying something to someone in a big Humvee, then pointing towards this house.

Cursing under his breath, he ran back over to the table.
